Pinewood FAQ

A favorite tradition in Cub Scouts is the Pinewood Derby. Since starting in 1953 at just one Pack, it has spread to almost every Pack in the United States and many Boy Scout Troops. Pinewood races are even held in many foreign countries.

We recently completed our Annual Pinewood Derby at the St. James Church. Forty three Cub Scouts and several siblings and adults competed.

Cub Scouts spent several weeks during January cutting, sanding, and painting their cars. Several adults got in on the fun as well.

Pinewood Derby kits include a pinewood block, four plastic wheels, and four axles.
Cars are run on a 32 ft long track. Cars are only powered by gravity, yet they manage some really quick lap times!
